Occupational route to becoming an engineer

Earn while you learn through a modern apprenticeship.

You've completed your GCSEs or Standard Grades and achieved 3 to 5 middle grades, including Maths, English and Science.

With these results you could begin a modern apprenticeship. Apprentices learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money at the same time.

There are two levels of modern apprenticeship, foundation and advanced, which both lead to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs), Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and, in most cases, a technical certificate such as a BTEC or City & Guilds.

If you feel that A levels are too theoretical for you, but might like the option of going to university in the future, then a modern apprenticeship would be ideal. Apprenticeships provide the necessary entrance qualifications for university.

You need to be aged between 16 and 24 to start a modern apprenticeship and complete it by the time you are 25.

Which apprenticeship is right for you will depend on your experience and the opportunities in your area. To find out more, visit the Learning and Skills Council website or for Scottish Modern Apprenticeships, visit the Skillseeker Initiative website.
