Celebrating 40 years of Inspec database

03 December 2008

This year marked a major milestone in the history of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Inspec Database with the publication of the ten millionth record. And, the celebrations will continue in 2009 as Inspec’s 40th anniversary is celebrated.

Inspec, a bibliographic database of abstracts to journal articles, conference proceedings, technical reports and other literature, was launched in 1969, although the online archives date right back to 1898.

Inspec provides comprehensive coverage of traditional and cutting-edge publications in the fields of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, communications, computer science, control engineering, information technology, manufacturing and mechanical engineering.

In addition, there is significant coverage of areas such as operations research, material science, oceanography, engineering mathematics, nuclear engineering, environmental science, geophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical technology and biophysics.

Simon Thomson, publishing director and general manager of Inspec, said, “Over the last four decades, the Inspec scientific editorial team has consistently added an invaluable layer of indexing and classification to the leading physics and engineering literature from around the world.

“We now add content faster than ever before and we will add almost 700,000 records to the database in 2009. We are extremely proud to reach this historic landmark and look forward to celebrating our ruby anniversary in 2009 and to many more innovative years to come.”
