The IET Faraday to support the new Engineering Diploma
28 November 2008
The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is supporting the delivery of the Engineering Diploma, by producing materials associated with Faraday, its education programme encouraging children to gain an interest in engineering.
The materials were written to support the teaching of the new Engineering Diploma. They all rise from current industrial application based on this year’s Faraday theme: Engineering in Sport.
The film and teaching support will help students to engage in a real understanding of many aspects in engineering and prompt them to start thinking about what lies behind the developments of products before they hit the market.
The materials will:
- Support the teaching of the new Engineering Diploma;
- Allow students to engage and own the resources and adapt them to their specific context and needs;
- Encourage high level of creativity and flexibility when using the activity;
- Provide stimulating, creative and relevant teaching and learning experiences - inside and outside the classroom.
These materials are related to the following three key storylines developed the for Faraday theme this year.
- Skeleton Bob - Aerodynamics in action.
- A new ‘smart’ material - D30 - Engineering materials to enhance sporting performance.
- The Wii - virtual gaming.
The IET Faraday 08/09 website holds all three storylines, plus related films are also available to view. As a consequence, the website and the films will be used throughout the materials to help reinforce and highlight key learning points.
The IET chief executive Robin McGill is in favour of the Diploma. He said, “The new Engineering Diploma is an excellent introduction to combine academic and applied learning. The diploma acts as a gateway to the world of engineering and the countless opportunities the industry can offer to many young people. The IET Faraday offers innovative materials for students, in the hope of them gaining a strong interest in engineering.”
