Savoy Place nominated for top conference centre award

20 November 2008

Savoy Place, the London home of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and leading conference venue, has been nominated for a top award.

It is up for the title of COOLest conference / exhibition centre in Prestige Events magazine’s 2008 COOL Venue Awards, along with the likes of London’s ExCel centre and the Barbican.

Anna Clover, IET Conferencing and Banqueting Manager, said, “We are thrilled just to be nominated for the award. It’s a huge honour to be up against the likes of the Barbican, the ExCel centre and Ministry of Sound.”

Savoy Place has a rich and varied history. It originally dates from 1246 and takes its name from Peter, Count of Savoy. Parts of ancient Savoy remained until the beginning of the 19th century but most buildings were swept away for the construction of Waterloo Bridge (1811) and the Thames Embankment (1862).

The building now occupied by the IET was originally built as a joint Examination Hall for the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Surgeons in 1889. In 1923, the newly formed BBC broadcast from Savoy Place.

The IET celebrates 100 years at Savoy Place in June 2009 and will be staging a programme of centenary celebrations.
