Using the Library
Information on what is accessible when visiting the IET Library, including our excellent ICT facilities and guidance on who can borrow books from the collection. A brief list of our services and resources is also included.
The Library Reading room:
The Library's impressive reading room with its original oak shelving, excellent lighting and air conditioning provides visitors with a comfortable yet stimulating environment to conduct research.
A selection of daily newspapers are available to read in a spacious and comfortable section of the reading room. Helpful library staff are on hand at the enquiry desk throughout the day to help you with your research.
ICT facilities:
Our Information and Communications Technology (ICT) facilities include a number of high-speed terminals for browsing the Internet and for searching the library catalogue. Members have access to Wi-Fi (wireless) on their laptop in the Library reading room. There are also a number of points available in the library for dial up network connection.
Coin-operated photocopier:
There is a self-service coin-operated copier in the library, which costs 10p per A4 sheet and 20p per A3 sheet used. The copier produces black and white copies only.
Library borrowers:
IET members and other UK engineering institution members, such as IMECHE and ICE members, may borrow publications that are available for loan. Non-members can visit the library and use our facilities for reference purposes only.
Inter-library loans:
An Inter-library loan service is available for other libraries requesting books and journal articles from our stock. Please see our "Document Supply" web page for more information.
Library-only membership:
Library-only membership is available for a small annual fee. Please see our "Library-only membership" web page for further information and to download a membership form.
A brief guide to other library services and resources on offer
- Access to a world class collection of current research from a wide array of global sources;
- Access to electronic resources such as the INSPEC database, online journals, and British Standards Online;
- Members can access our electronic books and journals remotely using their IET website log-ins. Please see our "Virtual Library" web page for further details;
- Remote access is also available to search the "Library online catalogue" for books and journal titles. Members must be logged into the website to request and reserve books. Members can also check their "Current loans" "Loan history", "Current reserves" and "Book renewals" status. Non-members can search the catalogue;
- Our "Research services" can provide assistance in locating information on technologies, sales, market data, products and suppliers. Quick enquiries are free of charge to members. More extensive research can be conducted for a fee;
- Book loans - A free of charge postal loan service is available;
- Book Renewals can be done via the "Online Library catalogue" after logging into the website, by telephone or by using the book renewal form;
- Non-UK users can borrow up to three books;
- Copies of journals or other extracts at a small charge;
- Over the counter sales of IET books from the Library bookshop.
