Marketing manager – membership and professional development (MPD)

A key senior management role, this position requires a dynamic and assertive individual possessing superior leadership skills, imagination and creativity.

Job summary

Working closely with the head of marketing, the director of membership and professional development (MPD) and senior managers, this role will strategically drive forward all aspects of membership development marketing including member recruitment, member retention and engagement and professional development, including professional registration. The post holder will be responsible for leading on all marketing and communications relating to the IET’s existing and potential membership base and will be the main point of contact for all marketing intelligence including product development, analysis and insight, communications and campaign management.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Provide strategic marketing management to the area of MPD;
  • Provide leadership and guidance to colleagues in the MPD team on all aspects of member development, professional development and registration marketing including strategic planning to communications, ensuring marketing and communications activity increases awareness of the IET among existing, increases participation and engagement and potential members and business partners;
  • Collaborate with MPD colleagues to improve professional registration uptake rates among new and existing members;
  • Ensure high visibility campaigns that result in improved member recruitment and retention trends;
  • Work closely with the corporate marketing manager to establish a language and communication style that builds IET brand awareness and raises the IET’s profile within the existing membership, especially active members and trustees;
  • Manage development of a range of marketing media, digital and print: from written materials, video, audio, web and other collateral from external suppliers;
  • Contribute to and manage implementation of pricing strategies and product development, working collaboratively across other functions in the marketing and communications directorate;
  • Contribute to and manage implementation of market intelligence and develop understanding of products and markets;
  • Provide effective marketing support to key business functions across the membership and professional development directorate;
  • Work closely with operational colleagues to drive forward business partners activity, including a review of the business partner package;
  • Develop corporate membership marketing activity, including group membership schemes;
  • Liaise with the marketing and communications product manager in the international development and global operations directorate to develop IET membership globally;
  • Take overall responsibility for the membership lifecycle;
  • Initiate and oversee the cascade of membership recruitment techniques in marketing campaigns across the IET;
  • Provide direction, expertise and best practice on the use of the marketing and communications mix;
  • Work with the corporate brand manager to manage specialist external suppliers from design to print, producing marketing communications that have impact and are consistent with corporate-level activity;
  • Manage all member communications channels, ensuring that all are of a consistently high quality in copy, tone, design and print and deliver consistent key messages to the membership base;
  • Contribute to the development of integrated marketing strategies across the IET business units;
  • Manage the marketing budget and prepare reports and plans as necessary. Monitor project activities, tracking progress against plans;
  • Ensure that all copyright issues are checked and adhered to and that the organisation is not subjected to any legal misrepresentation;
  • Build good working relationships with colleagues throughout the organisation and have a thorough understanding of individual business function needs;
  • Undertake any other duties and projects at the request of the line manager;
  • Be familiar with the health and safety and fire policies for the organisation and to attend mandatory updates where required.

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Educated to degree level;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Tact and assertiveness necessary to work within a demanding environment with the attitude and resilience to get the job done;
  • Experience working in a marketing and communications environment at a senior level;
  • People management experience;
  • Excellent project and budget management skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate and influence at all levels;
  • A sound knowledge of the full marketing mix, together with excellent copy writing and presentation skills;
  • Full IT literacy with sound knowledge of a wide range of online communication media;
  • Ability to work on own initiative and under pressure of tight deadlines and multiple projects;
  • Sound brand management experience;
  • Imagination and creativity.

Desirable criteria:

  • Marketing degree or professional qualification;
  • Experience working within a professional membership body or similar organisation;
  • Thorough understanding of professional development issues in the engineering community.
